For people who are just beginning to engage in resistance training, they may be wondering what exercises are appropriate for working the back of the legs. The hamstrings are made up of several muscles that run down the back part of the upper leg. There are few great exercises that beginners can choose from.

Most gyms and fitness facilities have machines devoted just to working the hamstring muscles. These machines typically involve a curling type of motion. In other words, the motion involves having some form of resistance typically placed against the back of the leg, near the Achilles tendon. The person then curls the weight up and back toward the buttocks. There are several variations of these machines. Some involve sitting and doing the motion. Others require the using to lie flat on their stomach while curling the weight. Some machines require the user to stand while doing the motion. There is more information on hamstring strengthening exercises at the Cleveland personal training blog. If you unfamiliar with how to do any exercises, consider working with a good certified personal trainer. Also make sure to consult with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
